Early Argentina
More specifically – Cordoba
The word Cordoba alone was responsible for shuttling hundreds of thousands of wing-shooters to the country of Argentina during the last few decades. This central province of Argentina was easily the most renowned destination is South America, and helped open the door to the numerous wing-shooting opportunities throughout the entire continent. The early hunters in Argentina were amazed to find over crowded dove roosts, ducks swarming flooded grain fields, and geese flying only feet off of the ground. The word spread like lead shot, and overnight Argentina became the most notorious wing-shooting destination in South America.
The overwhelming dove populations were originally the great allure of Argentina, and much of the countries fame and fortune stems from the small species outrageous population. Hunters from all over the world would travel to Cordoba to experience the never ending dove flights. First timers would melt the barrels off their guns in excitement, old timers would shoot a years salary worth of shells just incase they never made it back, and the good ole days were alive as long as you were hunting somewhere in South America. Still to this day Argentina is world-renowned for its high volume dove hunting.
More impressive than the population of doves in Argentina, is the fact that the fly all day. As the sun begins to rise, the majority of roosting doves will leave their perch for the grain fields and nearby water holes. This early flight provides sportsmen and women with tremendous morning shoots over scenic terrain. The afternoon hunts are highlighted by millions of passing doves on their return flight home to roost. Every evening in South America is marked by the returning dove roost, and provides some of the greatest volume for dedicated shooters.
Eared Dove
(Zenaida Auriculata)
The Eared Doves is the dominant species in Argentina and throughout South America. This species’ massive populations reside in large roosts across the continent. Their astonishing presence in the countries of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia is deeply rooted in the farming products of each region. For the province of Cordoba, and many surrounding regions of Argentina, its location near the delta of the Parana and Uruguay Rivers systems, and its agriculture based economy helped support the high-volume wing-shooting opportunities known throughout the country.
