Duck Hunting Decoys
Duck Hunting Decoys
Decoys Used for Duck Hunting in Uruguay, by Black River Outfitters
As all of you probably know, this subject is a very important part of the duck hunting strategy. Decoy spreads are just as important as blind location, camouflage, and good calling.
The species of ducks that we shoot in Uruguay – pintails, corn ducks, white-faced tree ducks, palm tree ducks, rosy-billed pochards, and several types of teal, and the conditions under which we hunt them define what kind of decoys we use, how many we need and finally the position of the decoys.
Our experience tells us that in Uruguay, in general, only a few decoys are required in a pond in order to have an optimal hunt. Too many decoys, especially early in the season, have proven to be counterproductive. We believe that due to the fact that most ducks here have never seen decoys, together with the lack of hunting pressure, it is not necessary to use more than ten to twelve decoys to lure ducks into the ponds.
Sometimes, later in the season, we need to use a few more, and we’ll throw in one or two Mojos to help us lure them in. All this strategy has been developed through years of experience and knowledge of the hunting environment and the patterns of ducks in Uruguay.
Regarding the arrangement of the decoys, depending on the size of the pond or canal that we are hunting of course, we normally lay them out not too far away from the blind trying not to use all of the available water surface. This, over time, has proven to be the best way to get the ducks to come in with confidence down to a good shooting range.
We, at Black River Outfitters continue experimenting with different kinds of decoys and different layouts to see how ducks react and try to find the best possible setup in order to improve productivity. After all, things change and no one can ever know everything about hunting.
We look forward to your reservations. Uruguay – a peaceful and safe hunting destination, by Black River Outfitters.
