A PASSION FOR WING-SHOOTING

Since 2004

URUGUAY’S PREMIER WATERFOWL AND UPLAND BIRD HUNTING DESTINATION.

The Portela Brothers founded Black River Outfitters in 2004 with a couple of very important goals in mind. One was to establish a superior waterfowl and upland bird-hunting lodge in Uruguay by offering the country’s greatest wing-shooting opportunities; the other was to offer the finest in accommodations and service, and the best in personal attention. Their commitment to these goals has brought you Pato Diablo Lodge in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay.

Pato Diablo Lodge
Punta Del Diablo, Uruguay

The duck hunting at Pato Diablo Lodge is simply the best opportunity for sportsmen and women in search of a high-volume duck hunt in South America.  Combine that with one of the greatest concentrations of wild perdiz throughout the country, and you have South America’s premier waterfowl and upland bird hunting destination.

What separates us from the rest?

LIKE ALL LEGENDARY HUNTING LODGES, THE REASON FOR OUR SUCCES IS OUR LOCATION!

Situated in the largest rice producing province of Uruguay, Black River Outfitters has the most exclusive duck and perdiz territories anywhere in the entire country. With secluded lagoons, ponds, fields, and pot-holes scattered across eastern Uruguay, the Portela Brothers ensure quality shooting opportunities during every outing.

THERE IS NO BETTER PLACE TO BE DURING WINTER’S MIGRATION THAN RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF URUGUAY’S FRESHLY CUT RICE PROVINCE!

To be more specific, our hunting territories are located just to the east of Uruguay’s Laguna Negra and right in the middle of South America’s great migration. The vast tracts of rice fields and marshes surrounding the huge reservoir have been secured by the Portela Brothers, and offer the best decoying duck hunts throughout the entire country. With rice being cut during the opening months of duck season in Uruguay, you can be certain that as a guest of Black River Outfitters, you will be situated right in the middle of the swarms of teal, pintail, and roseybills that descend on these fields during the winter months.

ELEVEN DIFFERENT SPECIES OF WATERFOWL!

Very few countries boast the variety of species that migrate through Uruguay, and the Portela Brothers provide the best opportunity to experience the challenge that each species presents. As a guest of Black River Outfitters, your travels will be rewarded with a mixed bag of waterfowl opportunities.

Ringed Teal

As the smallest species of teal throughout South America, the Ring teal provides challenging opportunities with its speed and sporty flying style. While this species is highly regarded for its beauty and acrobatic flying patterns, its greatest attraction is its rarity.

Brazilian Teal

This species is characterized by its blood red beak, iridescent green wings, and its tendency to flock and decoy in large groups. As a constant presence across the country, this species is highly regarded for its willingness to decoy.

Speckled Teal

The Speckled Teal is characterized by its speckled feather patterns, yellow beak, and speedy, acrobatic flying style. The Speckled teal is highly regarded for its willingness to respond to imitation calls, and willingness to decoy.

Silver Teal

This teal species is recognized by its soft peeps, speedy flight, and willingness to decoy. The Silver teal is most commonly found in large flocks during the early winter months, and can quickly fill any lagoon or pothole with its healthy populations. One of the favorites for our taxidermy enthusiasts!

Cinnamon Teal

This bird is one of the few teal species that is found in both North and South America, and the bird is highly prized by sportsmen and woman for its beauty. Recognized by its colors and characterized by its far reaching migration, the Cinnamon teal is a great prize in any country, state or province…… even Uruguay!

Chiloe Wigeon

The Chileo Wigeon is most commonly found in quiet, secluded lagoons and rice ponds across eastern Uruguay during the migration season. The Wigeon is generally found in smaller groups and possess a unique and entertaining decoy style.

Yellow Billed Pintail

This species is recognized by its bright yellow bill, brown body coloration, and long sprigtail. The Yellow-billed pintail is most commonly found in tight groups and decoy from high altitudes. Their caution and decoying style make them a highly sought after game bird throughout South America.

White-Cheeked Pintail

The White-Cheek pintail is characterized by the beauty of its bold white cheeks and blood red bill. Unlike the Yellow Billed Pintail, the White-cheek Pintail is quicker, and frequently flocks among teal species. The White-Cheek is highly sought after in South America because of its decoying style and beauty.

Red Shoveler

The Red Shoveler is colored a beautiful cinnamon red throughout its body with blue and green wing patterns and bold black bill. The Red Shoveler is recognized by its large shoveling bill, and characterized by its moderate flying speed and willingness to decoy.

Rosybill Pochard

This species is different in size and build from all waterfowl species of North America. It is slightly larger than a mallard and possesses uncanny speed, body control, and decoying ability. Most notable to this species is its red rosey bill and challenging decoying style.

White-faced Whistling Duck

The White-Face is largely residential to specific regions of Uruguay, and will seldom venture far from their breeding grounds. As a local population, the White Face Whistling Duck is characterized by its high flying patterns, loud, constant squealing, and cautious decoying style.

A COUNTRY OF WILD PERDIZ!

There is no greater upland wing-shooting experience than to pursue the wild perdiz over English Setters or Brittney spaniels at Pato Diablo Lodge.   With the strongest population of wild perdiz in South America, and our kennel of well trained pointers, the upland hunting at Pato Diablo lodge is wing-shooting at its finest.

What separates us from the rest?

FIELDS FLOODED WITH PERDIZ!

Uruguay is among the elite countries in South America when it comes to overwhelming populations of wild perdiz. From border to border, every agricultural province of Uruguay is saturated with this unique upland bird, and even better, aside from that of an occasional silver fox, the perdiz in this area find pressure only from guests of Pato Diablo Lodge.

A KENNEL OF EXPERIENCED UPLAND BIRD DOGS AWAIT YOU!

Second only to the perdiz itself is the enjoyment of hunting behind our kennel of pointers at Pato Diablo lodge. Our upland bird dogs are top breeds of English Setters and Brittney spaniels trained by professional handlers in Uruguay, and ready and waiting for the upcoming season. Each pointer in our kennel possesses an un-teachable instinct for finding and pointing upland bird and their natural passion for leading you to easy limits is among their greatest quality.
