Dove Hunting and Farmers
Dove Hunting in Uruguay with Black River Outfitters
Dove hunters should know that the best time of the year for this activity is September through April in Uruguay (Spring-Summer season), although dove hunting is open all year round.
This species is considered a plague in the country due to the damage they cause to grain crops such as sunflower, sorghum, soybean, etc.; so hunters are always welcome by farmers anywhere they show up with their guns!!
It must be taken into account that some medium to large grain fields have lost up to 50% of their yield to doves. Therefore we consider that with our activity we are contributing to control the population of doves in the country given that they have no natural enemies. Only a few silver foxes can penetrate the thick and thorny bushes and shrubs in the indigenous woods alongside streams and river banks where they roost, but they can hardly ever reach them.
This is a fun type of hunt, which is done next to big roosts or in busy fly paths where doves go feed and later come back to roost. High volumes can be expected allowing the shooters to practice all kinds of shots since there is no limit for shells in this type of hunt.
Hunters are always set up in blinds with comfortable stools or covered by natural bushes and tall grass depending on the hunting area used that day.
And what makes it so much fun? It is that the flocks are so big and fast sometimes that it becomes very difficult to pick a target and all that non-stop action makes it really entertaining. Once you get on them you do not want to stop!
All this experience with Black River Outfitters is also a very versatile kind of trip since it can be combined with a Golden Dorado fishing trip up the Uruguay River, which is the natural western border between Uruguay and Argentina. And also if the trip takes place during our summer a combo can be organized with a visit to the southeastern beaches of Maldonado and Rocha (including renowned and enjoyable destinations such as Piriapolis, Punta del Este and La Paloma).
Uruguay is a gentle and safe destination used by hunters from all over the world for over 25 years. It is open to every possibility for every taste. At Black River Outfitters we do our best effort to make “the trip of your life” out of this experience.
REMEMBER: Our dove hunts never fail and so wish the farmers!!
