Shotgun Shells Used for Duck Hunting in Uruguay, by Black River Outfitters
This is another frequently asked question by hunters who come down to try Uruguay wing-shooting for the first time: What kind of shells are we using? This is of course understandable since people naturally want to know where they stand, especially when they are going somewhere they have never been before.
In Uruguay good shotgun shells are always available because it is a small country and there are four major certified importers. Uruguay is open to trade within the region and the rest of the world so that it is easy to come by goods from all over the world.
We use 12 gauge and 20 gauge shells primarily of renowned brands such as Fiocchi (made in Argentina of imported components), Saga (made in Europe), or Trust (made in Spain using Fiocchi primers). Shells can be low brass or high brass and at Black River Outfitters we shoot nothing but lead. Our preferred pellet size for ducks is No.5 although we have used up to No.3 upon request and availability.
For ducks people tend to prefer 12 gauge, but some experienced hunters use 20 gauges to make it more challenging, and sometimes our women hunters use 20 gauges as well in order to reduce recoil. We would like to remind you that many hunting women have been shooting with us here in Uruguay, and very successfully we might add.
20 gauge shells with No.5 shot is commonly used to shoot doves in flight paths, sunflower or sorghum fields. Please note that we offer pigeon and dove hunts year round. The season for these two species is always open since they are mostly considered a nuisance in Uruguay – not a bad problem to have for hunters.
Finally for perdiz over pointing dogs hunters use both 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, depending upon their personal preferences, and for this type of hunt we advise No.7 shot.
